English Abstract

UV–Vis spectrophotometry was used to study the complexation between [C60] fullerene and acyclic thiapodand ethers (1-6) in toluene.

An absorption band due to charge transfer (CT) transition was observed in the visible region.

All of the complexes were found to be stable with 1:1 stoichiometry.

The stability constants (K) and the thermodynamic parameters for the supramolecular complexes of thiapodands with [C60] fullerene were determined.

This study shows that the values of K depend on the type of end group for podands, size of acyclic thiapodand ethers moiety, the type and the number of donor atoms.

All complexes formed were found to be enthalpy and entropy destabilized except the complexes of podands 6 and 4.

The high stability constant value for the [C60] fullerene:3 complex as compared to [C60] fullerene:(1-2, 4-6) complexes indicates high selectivity of podand 3 towards [C60] fullerene.
