English Abstract

Polymers are widely used in medical industry for various purposes.

Most important among the polymers having medical applications are those which are utilized as internal or partially internal instruments, because in these cases the polymer is in direct contact with the human body.

In recent years there has been a rapid increase in nanotechnology applications to medicine in order to prevent and treat diseases in the human body.

In this thesis, Chitosan-AgNP blend with poly (vinyl alcohol) and Poly (vinylpyrrolidone) ternary blends system were successfully prepared by solutions casting process of homogenous mixture.

The obtained biofilms were used as antimicrobial polymers.

The effect of antimicrobial activity, thermal behavior and chemical-physical interactions on the biofilms obtained were investigated.

Results from FTIR and DSC confirmed that the film consists of Chitosan / PVA / PVP.

Furthermore, blend solution of Chitosan-AgNP / PVA / PVP-Eug with different ratio were tested in antimicrobial assessment with different bacteria, by agar medium assay films and suspension samples tested with S.

aureus and P.

aeruginosa were observed.

The results strongly indicated an inhibition of S.

aureus and P.

aeruginosa growth in these films.

Specially biopolymer films containing AgNP high indicated inhibition than biopolymer films containing Eugenol and elucidate potential use of such system in biomedical application such as wound dressing.
