English Abstract

The present study aimed to determine the concentration of trace metals and their distribution patterns in a soil profile of the Tafila solid waste disposal site.

The analytical method validation included an optimization of the microwave digestion method using an acids mixture for analysis of trace metal concentrations in soil samples and it was performed using a certified reference material (CRM 141r).

Soil samples were collected during the winter on December 2012 from the investigated solid waste disposal site which located 35 km southern plateau of Tafila governorate.

In order to investigate the impacts of solid waste disposal on soil beneath, the samples were obtained at three soil depths 0-20, 20-40, and, 40-60 cm.

The following metals were analyzed namely : Zn, Ni, Pb, Cu, Co, and Fe using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS).

The physical and chemical soil properties, which believed to affect trace metals mobility in soil of the study area, were examined using pH, TOC %, EC, CaCO3 %, and soil texture.

The pH values was found within the normal Jordanian soil range which is characterized by alkaline pH due to presence of high carbonate buffering.

TOC percent found to be affected by solid and liquid wastes disposal mainly at the top layers due to recent waste disposal activities.

The soil EC results showed that some of the samples collected from the upper soil layer were saline due to heavy waste disposal and the soil texture was characterized as loamy.

The concentration levels of trace metals for the investigated site have been classified as a polluted site according to the typical range of trace elements in non-polluted soil.

Finally, the enrichment factor calculations showed that Cu was high enriched compared to other elements.

The statistical analysis of the results using the Principle Component Analysis (PCA) showed that the solid wastes disposal may be the main source of trace metals in study area.
