English Abstract

A residue analytical method using a gas chromatograph equipped with flame ionization detection (GC / FID) was developed for the analysis of nineteen phenolic compounds (19-Phenolic) in twenty five wastewater samples collected from olive mills in Karak and Tafila region during the period October-December 2012.

The total concentrations of 19-phenolic in all investigated samples ranged from 27 to 2165 mg L-1 with an average value of 81 mg L-1.

Among the analyzed phenolic compounds, 2, 3, 4, 5-Tetrachlorophenol was the most frequently occurred phenolic compound in the investigated area, while, 2, 3, 5, 6-Tetrachlorophenol was the least detected phenolic compounds.

The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were ranged 0.001-0.024 and 0.004-0.073 mg L-1, respectively.

The recovery rates for 19-Phenolic ranged from 81 to 115 %, with relative standard deviation RSD % ranging from 0.096 to 6.313 %.

The results of validation parameters verified that the experimental methodology was efficient and robust.

The study concluded that mitigation measures concerning phenolic compounds application should be taken to decrease phenolic residues in wastewater effluents produced from Olive Mills in order to improve the quality of wastewater treatment in southern Jordan olive mills and to reduce its potential impacts on surrounding environment.

This study has drawn the baseline data concerning the preliminary phenols concentration in wastewater effluents in Olive Mills and opens the door for further investigation on proper wastewater treatment and disposal in southern part of Jordan.
