Reaction of the Et4N+ salt of μ-H [Mo (CO) 5] 2 with excess of bis (diphenylphosphino) methane (dppm) ligand in THF under reflux yielded [(μ-H) (Ph2PCH2PPh2)Mo2(CO)8]¯and [(μ- H) (μ-Ph2PCH2PPh2) 2Mo2 (CO)6]¯ anions (designated as anions I¯ and II¯ respectively).
An identical product was also synthesized in a solid state reaction independently using a radiation microwave oven.
The two compounds were characterized by IR and 1H n.m.r.
[Et4N] [II¯] has been characterized by single crystal x-ray diffraction.
The two Mo atoms at a distance of (4) 3.4633 Å are triply bridged by the hydride ion and two dppm ligands .
The average distance between the P—P donor atoms of the dppm ligand is 3.1285Å.
The complex anion II shows an overall linear–eclipsed configuration.
