Abstract AR
Abstract EN
The porosity of a basalt rock was characterized using two methods: image analysis and mercury injection porosimetry (MIP).
From the first approach, the area-perimeter technique has been applied to compute fractal dimensions of pore surface roughness (Dc) over two ranges of pore-size scales, below and above 70 μm pore radii.
Dc was found to be 1.28 and 1.31 respectively.
Results are discussed related to the scale of investigation.
From MIP data and the application of the Friesen & Mikula algorithm based on the Menger sponge model, all computed fractal surface dimensions (Ds) showed values greater than 3.
These results raise a doubt about the reliability of this fractal fragmentation model to some kind of materials like basalt.
