English Abstract

This study is a socio-linguistic investigation into the realization of apology strategies used by Sudanese Advanced Learners of English as compared to those used by native speakers of English.

Two groups participated in this study.

The first one is a group of 47 Sudanese advanced Learners of English and the second group involves 20 native speakers of English.

The data was obtained by the use of a controlled elicitation procedure and the instrument used in this study is a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) for comparing the speech act realization patterns of native speakers and learners of English as a second language.

The DCT consists of incomplete discourse sequences that represent socially differentiated situations.

And participant is required to make appropriate apologies according to the situation.

The data analysis reveals differences and similarities between the two groups.

It is realized that the Sudanese students were less direct than the native speakers when offering apologies and they used more intensifiers than the native speakers did. The study ends up with some pedagogical implications.

It is found that Sudanese Advanced Learners of English lack pragmatic competence and suggests that learners of English as a second language, even at advanced levels, should consider the importance of the cultural and interactional dimensions of communicative competence and the importance of being aware of the social and cultural norms of the native speakers of the target language. The study also suggests that more investigations and research should be conducted in the area of pragmatics because there is still a need to fill in the gaps between native and non-native speakers and save their interactions from breakdown.
