English Abstract

Assessment is the key factor of any integrated development strategy for water resources.

Water resources assessment consists of determining their quantity, quality and availability for sustainable development and rational management.

The assessment of water must be conceived according to countries' needs. The main objective of this studies is to assess water resources potential of the area with emphasis on Wadi Kaja catchment in Geneina at western Darfur. Wadi Kaja flows intermittently during the wet season.

Its catchment covers about 35713 square kilometers and lies between longitudes 21° 50'- 24° 21' E & latitudes 12° 15'- 15° 00' N.

The study was done on the basis of hydrologic modeling.

The FEWS-GeosFM model which runs in GIS environment was used.

The input data comprises mainly the public available data from USGS that characterize the land surface, land cover, soils, evapotranspiration and rainfall estimates from NOAA.

The model was calibrated on a two years observed data from WAPS-2 project. It was found that the Wadi Kaja has a considerable potential surface water resource.

With a mean annual rainfall of 661.9 mm as estimated by NOAA and 481 mm as observed.

The rainy season was from July to October with August as the peak rainy season.

The mean runoff coefficient was found to be 28% leading to a mean annual yield of 1627*106 m3. This yield is substantial provided it is harvested for better sustainable utilization for the development of the area.
