English Abstract

Sedimentation is a serious problem affecting the soil and water resources by erosion, transport and deposition.

It is considered as salient enemy for water bodies.

Hence study of sediment characteristics as a relationship between sediment and discharge is very necessary. The objective of this study is to analyze and develop sediment Empirical formulae that enable the estimation of sediment inflow on the basis of river flow.

Three stations at the Blue Nile and its tributaries were selected namely Ed deim, Gawissi and Hawata along the Blue Nile, the Dinder and Rahad respectively.

The data range from two years in the case of Ed deim to four and six years in the case of Rahad and Dinder respectively. Analysis pertaining to sediment hydrograph and sediment rating were performed.

It was clear that the sediment peak precedes the peak flow.

The sediment-discharge analysis was performed for the whole year as well as on the basis of rising and falling limbs.

Three regression equations were developed for each station based on the three categories of data.

The Least sum of squares (the error sum of squares) index was used to select the optimum equation. The results showed that the common model based on whole flood period in which only one equation is used, which has the highest error in estimation of suspended sediment.

But the model in which the data is separated based on rising and falling limb.

It has the lowest error sum of squares and is considered as the optimized model.
