English Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the students, integrative and instrumental motivation for learning English at Najran University in the Southern region of Saudi Arabia.
About two hundred students participated in completing a questionnaire reflecting their motivational orientation and attitudes towards learning English in Saudi Arabia.
The research consists of five chapters.
Chapter one describes the overall structure of the thesis.
Chapter two provides background information about the education system in Saudi Arabia.
The aim is to provide an overall picture of the status of English in Saudi Arabia.
In addition it presents the theoretical background to the study.
Chapter three describes the main study in terms of the procedures, the participants and the data collection.
Chapter four reports the results of the data analysis, in relation to the hypotheses and the research questions.
Chapter five is concerned with drawing the principal theoretical and conclusions from this study. The result of the data analysis reveals that Saudi students have a higher degree of instrumental motivation than integrative ones.
The students, attitude is positive.
According to the findings, some recommendations and important implications are provided.
Finally, it is hoped that this study has a great benefit for developing teaching and learning English in Saudi Arabia.
