English Abstract

The human need to transport water from the supply to the point of use is great.

To accomplish this goal, many ways are used for water transmission using canals and pipes.

To transmit water to far and high levels, pumps are used.

In many cases pump are not suitable to water quality because the relation between the water quality and pump material it not known. Therefore when a pump works for long time its material will be affected by water. It will be clear that the effect at the pump casing, impeller are more than any part of pump when the corrosive water contact the pump parts and the corrosion continuous gradually until tend to reduce the performance of pump. To study these phenomena samples were taken from two sources.. o The Main Nile and its tributaries as the surface source, the samples were analysis to fine the physical and chemical parameter such as pH , EC, TDS, TSS, TH and the dissolved minerals. o Bara Basin at the Northern of Kordofan as groundwater source The effects of the different parameter on the pump material were studied separately, the outcome of which are : *Pumps that work at the raw water more physical effect than that work at the treated water, because the raw water contain the suspended solid materials especially at the raining season and flood. *Pumps that work at groundwater: more chemical effect when exposed to corrosion, because the groundwater may contain salt, and some boreholes has the acidity water. The thesis recommended that : Onset gets adequate analysis of water sample to determine the adequate pump. Special care should be taken in the selection of the material for the main pump components, i.e.

Casing, Shaft, Impeller and wearing rings. The pump materials should have the characteristic of high corrosion resistance, abrasive wear resistance, weldability when repair needed.
