A mathematical model for machinery selection was developed.

The model was based on the concept of obtaining the optimum width of a machine using physical power of the tractor and implement and economical optimization method.

The model was designed to predict the size of tractor and implements that can be required to complete the farm operations during a specific time, determine the compatibility of tractor and implement by properly matching the available tractor power with the optimum width obtained and compute the field time required for a machine to complete a certain operation, field capacity and fuel consumption.

There is no significant difference (at 0.95 and 0.99%) when the model is verified with the Case International Method (plastic ruler) irrespective of soil or machine type.

However, the model was found sensitive to speed, soil conditions, and cultivable area and not sensitive to purchase price.

The results of the model application are found almost identical with actual data of Rahad Agricultural Scheme–Sudan except the fuel consumption, which was slightly less in case of the model.

Hence, the developed model can be used to aid decision–makers in selecting the optimum tractor–machine complement size and in scheduling machinery fleet.
