English Abstract

This study is an attempt to identify the problems encountered by students in the use of the present tenses, while teaching and learning English as a foreign language.

It concerns with investigating the grammatical structures that are thought of to be confusing; the present simple tense, the present progressive, the present perfect and the present perfect progressive.

It also aims to analyze the subjects' errors to find out why such errors are committed. A written test is a procedure used in this research to help the researcher find out and analyze the problems of the students while using the present tenses.

The students are studying spine 5.

They are from different secondary schools, in the locality of Khartoum. The written test data analysis ascertained the hypotheses that are at the beginning of the research.

It also reveals that the subjects really face problems in the structure and the use of the present tense. To overcome such problems the researcher suggests adopting a balanced method that focuses on the form, the use and the meaning forms.

Also it is recommended to design different techniques which meet the students' needs, interests and which make students able to get the target structure and to know when and how the target structure can be used. This study consists of five chapters.

Chapter one is an introduction for the study in which the problem is stated, the research questions are set, the aims and the objectives are identified, the hypotheses and the significance are illustrated. Chapter two reviews what is written about the present tenses their definitions, their forms and their functions.

It also shows different approaches and methods for teaching the present tenses and the target language. Chapter three deals with the research methodology that describes the used tools, the chosen subjects and the instruments used for data collection. Chapter four is devoted for the discussion of the results and the findings of the research. Chapter five is the conclusion of the thesis.

In this chapter a summary of the results is given in addition to some suggestions and recommendations that are thought to enable the learners to use what they are taught properly.
