English Abstract

The study area of, Jebel Moya, west of Sennar town is located between latitudes 13º 21` and 13º 30` and longitude 33º 18` and 33º 23`.

People who live in this area depend on groundwater which is found in fractures of Basement rocks.

Referring to the analyses of the wells conducted by Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resource- Administration of Groundwater laboratory of Sennar town the results of the analyses revealed in of the groundwater is not suitable for human use because some parameters are more than the limit of (WHO Guidelines) and local standard (SSMO).

The local Government studied the use of treatment of river water by system of slow sand filter as a sample system of treatment of surface water to provide health water for human use.

In this system treatment of chemical, physical, bacteriological parameters were determined.

A water treatment plant has been constructed at the banks of the west Sennar Sugar Scheme canal, which convey water from Blue Nile.

After the study and analyses of samples in different steps (settling, filtration, and chlorination) the water has been found to be lie within the maximum permissible limit of (WHO, 1993) and (SSMO,2003) except for the turbidity and the total bacterial count.

This experience can be transferred to similar areas after taking care of small problems in this project such as (mice, the flooding by rain and the topography by providing contour maps).

The introduction of such drinking water treatment plants will improve the social and health aspects of Jebel Moya residents.
