English Abstract

Acacia species resembled morphologicaly.

But some confusion on their identification and classification can be drawn.

This study investigates the macro-and microscopical characters and biochemical markers of the seeds of eight Acacia taxa : A cacia mellifera, A.

nilotica ssp, adansonia, A.

nilotica ssp nilotica, A.

oerfota, A.

polycantha ssp.

campylacantha, A.

senegal var senegal, A.

seyal var seyal and A.

sieberiana var sieberiana.

The results of the morphological features of seeds of the studied taxa showed the presence of major and minor macro and microscopical characters, which can be used for classifying Acacia species into three groups according to cluster analysis performed by using Unweighted Pair-Group method with the Arithmetic Mean (UPGA) : The first group consist of A.

nilotica ssp, adansonia, A.

nilotica ssp nilotica and A.

sieberiana var sieberiana and these species /subspecies can be distinguished by the seed surface.

The second group includes A.

oerfota, A.

mellifera and A.

polycantha ssp.

campylacantha which are distinguished by the seed colour and areole shape. The third group includes: A.

senegal var senegal and A.

seyal var seyal these can be distinguished by the hilum shape.

Seed coat was examined ultrastructural morphology of seeds coat surface examined using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).

There are minor differences in the internal structure of studied Acacia taxa.

Seeds the variation in seed macro- and microscopical characters were used in the construction of an indented key to the studied Acacia taxa.

Proximate analyses and phytochemical screening of the studied seeds were evaluated using standard techniques.

Moisture, Ash, lipids, Proteins, Fibres and Carbohydrates were assayed and Cu, Zn, Cr, Pb, Mn and Fe were evaluated in mineral analysis using atomic absorption spectrophotometric techniques.

Physico-chemical studies of seed oil were reported for the first time and could be a very useful criteria for seed identification.

Some differences were determined in the main type of fatty acid and /or amino acid in species patterns.

The pairing affinity index was calculated on the basis of the distribution of fatty acids and amino acids in studied seeds.

The results in the present study are helpful in the preparation of the monograph for evaluation and identification.
