English Abstract

Khartoum North Power Station (KNPS) has two units of water treatment to enter the steam cycle for electricity generation.

the incoming water to the Demineralization plant is approximately about 50m3/hr, the water passes the filtration process for removing turbidity, suspended solids , the demineralization process .the treated water is stored in the Demineralized water storage tank for using in the steam generation cycle. The aim of this study is to determine and promote filter performance through the assessment of the filter operation efficiency.

data about clarified and filtered water parameters i.e.

(PH, Conductivity, Turbidity, Suspended Solids, Q & ∆ P)for one filter cycle was determined and the filtration process was evaluated according to the calculations of the gravel filter performance and efficiency expressed in terms of the average PH, average K, average turbidity and average suspended solids, this research was done and finished in august 2009. Analyses of the collected data revealed that the gravel filter performance has good efficiency in removing turbidity and suspended solids beside maintaining the averages PH& K within the allowable limits. The average removal efficiency for the tested parameters is as follows: the turbidity is 52.99 %, the suspended solids is 92.97 %.

The average PH for clarified water is7.45 and for filtered water is 7.39; average K for the clarified water is 260 µs / cm and for filtered water are 260.16 µs / cm. Thus the Filtration process at KNPS have high removal efficiency for turbidity, suspended solids, however to increase the removal efficiency for turbidity, more attention should be paid to the losses of the filter bed material during the back wash process also the adjusting of entering the back wash cycle should be according to the difference in pressure (pressure loss) not by the specified time.
