English Abstract

Preschool children represent one of the important social groups in the society upon whom symptoms of malnutrition can easily be detected.

Consequently, nutritional studies on preschool children are usually conducted to explore the nutritional problems in the society at large.

The main objective of this study is to assess the health and nutritional status of preschool children between 3-6years of age exploring some factors affecting them.

The study was conducted in South Kurdufan State (Nuba Mountains) with emphasis on three units of Dulunj province as fellow :  Dulunj.

 Habila.

 Silara.

A sample of 300 preschool children were selected randomly from the khalwas related to the primary school and private kindergartens in the three units with the total of 94 children from Dulunj, 102 children from Habila and 104 children from Silara.

For anthropometric measurements, weight, height, accurate age and mid-upper-arm-circumference were taken.

Then, weight-for-height, weight-for-age, and height-for-age were calculated for the assessment of the nutritional status.

Information about socioeconomic status of the family, clinical signs, and dietary pattern were collected using questionnaire and interview methods.

Numbers and percentages for data analysis were used and presented in Tables and Figures.

The NCHs/WHO reference standards were used to assess physical status of preschool children under the study by standard deviation units (Z-scores).

According to the anthropometric measurements, biochemical analysis and clinical signs malnutrition was detected in children at the three areas of the study.

The results of anthropometry showed that there were malnourished preschool children as follow : o 23.0 % of preschool children were moderately malnourished according to MUAC measurement.

o 14.0 % of preschool children were moderately malnourished according to Weight-for-Height Z-scores.

o 20.0 % of preschool children were moderately malnourished according to weight-for-age Z-score and 2.0 % of them were severely malnourished.

o 17.0 % of preschool children were moderately malnourished according to height-for-age Z-score and 1.0 % were severely malnourished.

Also, it was found that the nutritional status of males was better than females and that may be due to discrimination between family members within the household regardless of their actual needs.

Regarding food intake ; there were deficiencies in vitamins and minerals.

Some nutritional diseases like anemia, dental caries and other diseases were observed.

According to the results of the analysis, there are many factors which affect the nutritional status of the preschool children such as educational level of the mother, income of the family, spaces between births, the use of mass media and cultivation or having animals for the family consumption.

The recommendation of this study emphasized the importance of improving the economical status of the families as well as health and nutrition knowledge among mothers.
