Synthesis and antimicrobial activity of some novel condensed 1, 5-benzodiazepines and 1, 5- naphthodiazepines

English Abstract
Various Mannich bases from 1-naphthol, 2-naphthol, hydroquinone and p- benzoquinone were synthesized using some secondary amines.
They were synthesized by smooth and economical method using dioxan as solvent. These bases were then condensed for the first time with ortho-phenylenediamine to afford novel synthesis of 1,5-benzodiazepines and 1,5-naphthodiazepines. The intermediates and final products were characterized by various spectroscopic methods(UV, IR, MS and NMR spectroscopy) and some of them were screened for antimicrobial activity against two standard Gram positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis and staphylococcus aureus), two Gram negative bacteria (E.coli and pseudomonas aeroginusa) and two fungi (Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans) using cup-plate agar diffusion method.
Ampicillin and gentamycin were used as standard antibacterials while clotrimazole and nystatine were employed as standard antifungals. Mannich bases from hydroquinone showed enhanced antimicrobial activities against at least three of the standard organisms and was comparable to that of the standard antibiotics but Mannich bases from 2-naphthol were associated with low antimicrobial activities.
