English Abstract

Many Mannich bases were prepared from cyclopentene -1, 2-diones by using some secondary amines and aldehydes.They were synthesized by two different methods.

These bases were then condensed with ortho –phenylenediamine to afford the corresponding exchange products.

The corresponding reaction with 2, 3-diaminopyrridine so far failed The structure of intermediate and final products were elucidated by various spectroscopic methods (UV, IR and NMR spectroscopy) and some of the products were screened for antibacterial activity against two standared Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis and Stophylococcus aureus), two Gram –negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeroginosa) and two fungi (Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans) using cup–plate agar diffusion method.

Amoxicillin and gentamicin were used as standard antibacterials.

Clotrimazole and nystatin were employed as standard antifungals.

Some of these compounds showed activity against test organisms
