English Abstract

This study including to hydrogeology of Omdurman area which are located between latitude 150 : 10 to 160 : 00 N, longitude 320 : 00 to 320 : 40 E Omdurman are located in semi arid zone, the climate is a hot in summer, and cold in winter, the ratio of the rains fall 162mm / y between July to September. The study area is formed, at the base, of the Precambrian basement rocks that are the oldest rocks in the study area, these rocks are overlain by the Cretaceous Nubian sandstone formation.

This formation contains, from bottom to top, conglomerate, sandstone and mud stone.

They are intruded by basaltic volcanic rocks, mainly basalts, outcropping at jebel Toriya SW of Omdurman.

The Cretaceous Nubian sandstone formation forms the principal ground water confined aquifer. The static water level is fluctuating with reference to distances from the Nile.

It ranges from a few meters height near the Nile river to more than 100 m far from it.

General water movement direction is towards North West. The ground water recharge in the study area is from the Nile River up to 15km west (Kheiralla, 1966), However, far west it is recharged from wadis and rain water fall. Recharge and discharge from Nile river are assume to be equivalent but discharge is mainly affected by pumping.

Physical and chemical characteristics of the Omdurman ground water was found to be fit for domestic use and human consumption and lie well within the limits of the international and national allowed levels.
