English Abstract
This study was conducted in Rumbek Town, the Capital of the Lakes State.
It lies in the centre of Lakes State in the central part of Southern Sudan.
It is located between Latitudes//0 /0 70 – //5 /4 60 N and Longitudes //0 /0 290 – //0 /3 290E and elevation of 420m above the sea level.
The study area covers of about 8km2.
The main problem is that the community in the study area complained about spread of water related diseases.
The main objective of the study is the assessment of groundwater quality to ensure its safety for both drinking and irrigation.
The data collected about the study area were 25fresh water samples from groundwater wells.
The collected materials consist of town plan map, location map of Rumbek Town, rainfall data and geological map of the study area.
Water samples were analyzed for physical, chemical and bacteriological analysis in local Laboratory in Rumbek and also analyzed for physical and chemical for water quality for confirmation in UNESCO Laboratory. The results were compared with SSMO Standard and WHO Guideline.
The physical and chemical results from UNESCO Lab.
showed that the ground water is safe and of good quality, while the analysis of the local Laboratory in Rumbek reported that nitrite exceeded the permissible limit of SSMO Standard and WHO Guidelines. The bacteriological results analysis which conducted in local Lab.
in Rumbek, showed the absence of E-coli in 23water samples, while 2water samples collected from Malakia (1) and Mabior Ngapt Market locations indicated existence of E-coli.
The water samples for bacteriological were not brought to be confirmed by UNESCO Lab.
due to lack of possible facilities for transportation of biological samples in the local Lab.
in Rumbek. A location map of boreholes and drainage patterns maps were produced for the study area, using Geographical Information System (GIS) soft ware. The study revealed some differences in the results of the analysis between the two Laboratories.
Thus, it is recommended this problem should be corrected.
Periodical testing for physical, chemical and microbiology for ground water should be conducted.
Standard Laboratories and capacity building should be provided to local technicians in order to satisfy the local and international standards.
