This study addressed problems encountered by secondary school students when using English prepositions in writing composition. The area of research is the Khartoum High Secondary School, third year students.

The researcher has chosen 16 schools and from them he targeted seven randomly, and then from those seven schools, he took 120 students as a case study. As mentioned above, the main goal of this study is to trace the problems that third year students of High Secondary Schools face in writing compositions and to try to point out the areas of difficulties, the problematic prepositions and finding a remedy for the problems. For achieving the objectives and the goals of this study, the researcher has raised the following questions : 1.

Why do students avoid using prepositions and why most of their mistakes in the area of prepositions? 2.

Are prepositions difficult to learn and teach? 3.

Do students rely on their L1 prepositional knowledge in acquiring and understanding prepositional usage in English? 4.

Is there any relationship between the teacher, the teaching method and the mistakes committed by students? In addition to the questions that were mentioned above, the following hypotheses are proposed : 1.

After that the researcher analyzed the results of the exam according to certain variables such as sex, governmental or private schools. The researcher has also used other statistical means such as the t-test, standard deviation, co-efficient correlation, the mean and the Chi-squire.
