English Abstract

Hydropower is a very important energy source used to generate electric energy in the world, its smart way to solve fossil fuel problem.

Hydropower has many advantages to be first priority in sustainable development projects program in the Sudan, because it's renewable and clean hasn't effects in ecosystem, same as the thermal sources depletion.

NEC personality is generate, transition and distribute the electric energy to all consumption sectors; has 4 hydropower plant on Roseires, Sennar and El Girba and Gebel Aulia dams, and implement the Merrawi hydropower plant project with 10×120 MW all units synch to national grid in 2010.

Hydropower plant converts available energy in the water column in order to the head and flow velocity from reservoir throws the penstock and guided by guide van to spiral case to impact the turbine runner, to mechanical energy.

Water physical behavior at guide van opening has characteristics of water inertia, water compressibility and pipe wall elasticity in the penstock.

The effect of water inertia is to cause changes in turbine flow to lag behind changes in the guide vane opening.

Pipe wall elasticity causes traveling waves of pressure and flow in the water-a phenomenon commonly referred to as water hammer.
