English Abstract
This research is concerned with the identification and analysis of the English pronunciation problems encountered by students and teachers at Sudanese Secondary schools ( with reference to Third Year).
Chapter One contains : the statement of the problem , the objective of the research , the significance of the researcher, the research questions the research hypotheses as well as the statements of assumptions to be considered. Chapter Two covers the literature Review.
It also makes a comparison between Spin 6 and Headway Intermediate terms of teaching methods and techniques, equipment and classroom activities .
It, too, presents the common pronunciation problems that face Secondary School students and teachers, Besides, it introduces a list of selected previous studies that relate to the research in a way or another. Chapter Three involves the research methodology i .e the tools the researcher used for data collection and administration (the questionnaire and the English pronunciation tests).
It also presents the computer progrmmes used for results analyses, namely, SPSS and Chi-square Test programmes . Chapter Four includes the presentation, analysis and discussion of results obtained from the teachers' attitudes towards the questionnaire statements and the students' responses to the questions in the pronunciation tests This chapter contains tables and charts displaying the results, as well. Chapter Five deals with the answers to the research questions , the main findings which can be summarized as fallows : 1- A number of factors contribute to the pronunciation difficulty facing Sudanese Secondary school students.
These factors are : poor pronunciation teaching techniques.
lack of effective pronunciation activities.
lack of exposure to native English speakers .
non–specialized English teachers .
teachers not attending training courses.
teachers not encouraging their students to listen to English spoken by native speakers over radio and / on T V.
Some teachers inherited bad English pronunciation habits, and they can not easily eradicate these pronunciation mistakes, a situation which adversely affects the students learning correct English pronunciation In addition to that, this chapter presents the suggestions and recommendations given by the researcher.
