English Abstract

Oral contraceptive pills are used to regulate and control birth in all pre-menopausal women.

Side effects of these pills become attention specially their effect on blood pressure and their risk in blood flow, and disease related, for example venous thrombosis and heart disease.

The purpose of this study was to determine lipid profile, notably measurement of serum cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein and low density lipoprotein of women using oral contraceptive pills- as a risk factor of thrombosis and heart disease. Venous blood was taken from 67 women attended to Sudanese family planning Society-Atbara, Sudan 2007 ; and serum was separated.

Their age range between (19-45) year's old using oral contraceptive pills of two types (combined oral contraceptive “COC”, and progesterone only pills “POP”) with a duration range from one year to more than five years. More informational data was obtained by closed ended questionnaire.

In this study, (29.8 %) of women were hypertensive, (43.3 %) have a family history of hypertension, (6 %) have a family history of venous thrombosis, (3 %) have a family history of heart disease. The mean serum cholesterol level was (156.16 ± 5.52) mg/dl.

The mean serum triglyceride level was (126.89 ± 12.84) mg/dl.

The mean serum LDL was (88.75 ± 2.95) mg/dl.

The mean serum HDL level was (48.06 ± 4.54) mg/dl.

We conclude from this study that, there is no effect of using oral contraceptive pills on the level of lipid profile, except for HDL which have a significant change in its level.
