English Abstract

Errors may permit the formulation of rules and lead to observing learners’ language development.

Therefore, this study is concerned with analysis and evaluation of errors in “tenses” which made by the students at secondary schools. The main problem of this study is that the Sudanese learners of English language fail to achieve an acceptable level of proficiency in their usage of tenses. This study is limited to Sudanese speakers selected from different secondary schools in Omdurman province and covered third year students (males and females). The main objectives of this study to identify the grammatical errors witch are made by Sudanese learners in tense usage, to identify the problematic areas in tense usage which affect performance and to help learners gain better use of English tenses. Chapter one is an introduction, chapter two is a theoretical framework, chapter three is review of related literature, chapter four considers the methodology in the study, chapter five presents the results and discussions and finally chapter six gives a conclusion and recommendations. The main findings of the study, the errors have made by the students in all tenses, the percentage of errors in some tenses was high, the techniques of teaching English language differ from one teacher to another and the percentage of learners’ errors in model schools was less than the percentage of learners’ errors in governmental schools. Finally, the recommendations of the study are, the tenses in English language have to be treated with especial care, in classrooms the students need to see all tenses with a well-defined structure, errors have to be corrected in time, teaching English language as a subject in the first or second year of primary schools and the teachers of English language in primary schools must be qualified enough.
