English Abstract

Available sediment data and information on High Aswan Dam were collected, compiled, and reviewed.

The objective is to investigate their effects on the Nile River morphology associated with the sedimentation of Lake Nubia in the Sudan bordering Egypt. The analysis of the collected data revealed that there is a constant sediment volume of about 130 tones annually deposited in the narrow rocky southern reach upstream Lake Nubia.

Site observations indicated that this great amount of sediment deposition has converted the dry bare land and hard rocky nature of the area to a virgin alluvial fertile flood plain extending on the two sides of the river bank. Site investigations have also indicated that the construction of High Aswan Dam has adversely affected the area.

The adverse effects comprise inundation of lands, archaeological sites, historical monuments, bank erosion, decrease of storage capacity affecting hydropower potential and deterioration of water quality northwards. The study revealed that detailed investigations in agricultural potential in Lake Nubia are extremely important.

The plans of future studies should include: identification of soil types, extent of the area, elevation, groundwater potential and methods of irrigation.
