English Abstract

A total of 487 first ejaculates of semen were collected during the whole period of the study, of which 242 ejaculates were collected from Kenana bulls and 245 ejaculates from Butana bulls.

221 ejaculates were collected during Winter season, 129 ejaculates during Autumn season, and 137 ejaculates during Summer season. The results obtained revealed that, the semen characteristics of Kenana and Butana bulls, respectively, had average volume of 5.54 ± 1.45 and 5.63 ± 1.28 ml; mass motility 3.35 ± 0.58 and 3.50 ± 0.62; individual motility 71.40 ± 8.39 and 71.05 ± 7.69 %; concentration of 1.63 ± 1.08x106 and 1.54 ± 0.76x106 per cubic millimeter; abnormal morphology 8.82 ± 6.24 and 7.30 ± 5.80 %; head abnormalities 3.07 ± 2.11 and 2.40 ± 2.04 %; mid-piece abnormalities 3.47 ± 2.58 and 2.70 ± 2.22 %; tail abnormalities 2.27 ± 1.54 % and total rejection of ejaculates of 20.6% and 10.1 %. In the present study, no significant variations in semen characteristics were found between Kenana and Butana bulls. The average post-thawing motility of Kenana bulls’ spermatozoa was found to be 52.19±6.45 and 68.42 ± 2.97% for Sodium Citrate and Tris Extender, respectively.

While in Butana bulls it was found to be 56.28±1.48% and 62.40±1.95% for Sodium Citrate and Tris Extender, respectively.

Significant difference (P < 0.05) was found between Sodium Citrate and Tris.

Significant seasonal variations (P < 0.05) were found in the present study for individual motility, abnormal morphology, and mid-piece abnormalities in both Kenana and Butana bulls, while seasonal variation for sperm tail abnormalities was found in Kenana bulls only.

No seasonal variations were observed for volume of ejaculate, mass motility, and sperm concentration in Kenana and Butana bulls. In this study, the high quality semen of Kenana and Butana bulls was collected during Winter season, while the poorest semen quality was collected during Summer season. In the present study, significant variation (P < 0.05) in respect of ejaculates rejection was found between Kenana and Butana bulls, with better results for Butana bulls.
