English Abstract
-This study was carried out to assess the microbiological quality of drinking water in Omdurman, Elthawra area. The study was conducted during the period from July 2007 to April 2008 and 84 samples were collected from different sources.
The study was divided into two phases so as to cover different season, to see if there was any seasonal variation in the results.
The method used in the bacteriological examination was Multiple Tube Method. The incidence of coliform, thermotolerant coliforms and faecal streptococci was determined in different sources. The density of total coliform was found to be constantly greater than of the other indicator bacteria(59.5%of the total samples), followed by faecal streptococci(50%of the totalsamples ) and thermotolerant coliforms(40.5%of the total sample) during summer season, in winter season coliforms bacteria(50%of the total samples) followed by thermotolerant coliforms(33.3%of the total samples) and faecal streptococci(26.2%of the total samples). The highest count of all microbial groups was recorded in metalic tanks water, plastic tanks water and taps water respectively, and the lowest count was detected in wells water In the present study we found that, there was a seasonal variation of drinking water quality, the highest number of bacterial contamination were detected in summer and the lowest count were detected in winter season. Also fungi and algae were isolated and identified in all samples, fungal genera/species in the water tested were:- Saprolegnia sp., Rhodotarula sp., Penicillium sp., Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus terrus, Aspergillus flavous, Fusarium sp. Trycophyton, verucosum and Rhizobus sp. XV The most important algae were isolated:- Spirogyra, Staurastrum, closteriopsis, Chlorella, chorococcum, Oedogonium, Nitzschia sp., Melosirna and Anabaena.sp. In this study physo-chemical parameters investigated in different sources of water and found that there were correlation between turbidity and electric conductivity and microbiological contamination.
