English Abstract
Three field experiments were conducted during 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons in the demonstration Farm of Shambat Research Station.
The objective was to study some physiological aspects of seed set in an open-pollinated sunflower cultivar-Damazien 1-3.
The aim of the first experiment was to study vegetative growth till ripening, the second was to study different pollination methods, and the third was to study source-sink relationship of the plant.
Experiment (1) contain one plot whereas experiment (2) and three contain (4) replications. Parameters studied included : growth attribute (plant height, number of leaves / plant, leaf area / plant, leaf area index, leaf dry weight, stem dry weight, disc dry weight, plant dry weight, and leaf duration (days)), reproductive attribute (days of flowering, daily-opening rows / disc, number of rows / disc, daily opening flowers / disc, number of flowers / disc, disc diameter, number of seeds/disc, empty seed percentage, filled seed percentage, 100 seed weight and yield / plant. Results showed that bee pollination had positive effects on seed set of sunflower compared to hand and self-pollination.
It significantly increased filled seed percentage,100-seed weight and yield / plant; and significantly decreased empty seed percentage and days to maturity.
Results also revealed that, decreasing sinks affected seed set, in contrast, it significantly increased filled seed percentage and days to maturity; and insignificantly 100-seed weight.
Whereas significantly decreased seed number / disc, empty seed Percentage and yield / plant.
On the other hand, decreasing sources negatively affected seed set of sunflower.
It significantly decreased filled seed percentage and 100-seed weight; and insignificantly yield / plant.
Moreover, it significantly increased empty seed percentage.
