English Abstract

The vase life of rose and carnation cut flowers were determined by various physiological factors that determine the rate of their senescence.

The vase life of the two cut flowers studied were prolonged by the 8-HQS treatment.

The best concentration was 100ppm, when combined with sucrose 3 % gave negative effect for roses while positive result obtained in carnation cut flowers.

AgNO3 in different concentration, significantly result in a maximum vase life compared to other treatment, while sucrose recorded the lowest vase life specially under lower concentration.

The per cent of wilting was minimized as a result of using this treatment.

However the per cent of wilting increased with the increasing in concentration of 8-HQS, that wilting occurred after 10, 8 and 7 days of vase life for 100, 200 and 300 of 8-HQS in rose and 14, 12,13 in carnation respectively . The longest period to reach per cent of wilting was obtained by AgNO3 at 30ppm 13 days for rose and 17 days for carnation which was the best treatments while, sucrose resulted in the lowest period to reach wilting per cent (6,7 and 8 days) in rose and (10,10and 12) in carnation at 1,2and 3% sucrose concentration respectively. The best treatment of each chemical retarded the chlorophyll as well as carbohydrate degradation during postharvest life.

These physiological processes are connected to cut flower longevity and quality. The range time for these studies extended from 24-2-2006 till 17-8-2008.

But the practical work done within the period of 17-7-2007 till 8-9-2008 .in Taif University Laboratory of Biology and had been completed in Khartoum University the central laboratory-shumbat campus.

A Completely Randomized Design with three replicates was used for different experiment.
