English Abstract

The present study targeted the population of Khartoum state whom exposed to leaded gasoline, 29 sample were studied including petrol station workers, traffic policemen, taxi drivers and bus driver.

Their age ranged between (21 to 41 years) mean is 30.8, and there weight ranged between (47–95 kg ), all of them are male. The contamination by leaded gasoline was studied.

Blood lead concentration was found, ranges between (20 - 88 µg /dl) mean is 33.5.

These levels exceed the biological standard which ranged between (7–22 µg / dl).

In the present study, there is no significant difference between control and targeted sample, so Khartoum population are liable to lead poisoning. Clinical symptoms, that related to lead poisoning were studied, fatigue present in 51.7 %, headache result in 41.4 %, convulsion in 3.4 %, numbness and GIT disorder in 27.6 % of targeted samples.

No significant correlation between blood lead levels and any of these symptoms except convulsion shows a high significant correlation. No significant correlation was found between blood lead levels and smoking, age, weight, duration of work and daily working hours.

There is a partial positive effect of daily working hours on blood lead levels. This study showed that Khartoum population is contaminated by leaded gasoline and has recommended a preventing of adding lead to gasoline, measuring and monitoring of blood lead in Khartoum population, and supporting the research on lead contamination.
