English Abstract

-Water is the essence of the irrigation process and landscape is vital for human life.

Conservation of water and soil resources is the responsibility of the community as well as the individuals.

Savings in water resources can be attained by considering Modern irrigation systems for landscaped areas. Fully automated sprinkler and low-volume irrigation systems are considered in this research as the developed generation of the conventional existing landscape irrigation systems represented in surface irrigation systems (flood and basin).

Description of both Modern and conventional irrigation systems components are presented. Data were collected to demonstrate design calculations for pilot project located within the research area (Old Khartoum) for both the Modern irrigation systems and conventional surface irrigation systems to produce comparison between both Modern and conventional systems identifying the advantages and disadvantages of each system. Annual water required to irrigate turf area (10,000 m2) using sprinkler system is 317550m3 while the water required to irrigate the same turf area using surface flood system is 678170m3 which equals to 2.14 times the maximum yearly water quantity required by the sprinkler system. Annual water required to irrigate hundred trees with basin 1.2m diameter is 2482 m3 by using low-volume system while the annual water required to irrigate the same hundred trees by using surface flood system is 7665m3 which equal to 3 times the maximum water required by low-volume system.

In spite of the higher cost for establishing Modern fully automated landscape irrigation systems (Sprinklers and Low-volume) with respect to the surface flood irrigation system, nevertheless, the water saving is anticipated to cover the cost within three to four years for the sprinkler irrigation system and two to three years for the low-volume irrigation system
