English Abstract
The study area is located in Dongola Town , the capital of the Northern State.
It lies west of the River Nile at latitude 19˚–10΄N and long.30˚– 25΄E ,and altitude of 228 m ,above the mean sea level .The extent of Dongola is about 100 km with length of 20 km and 5 km width.
The purpose of the study is to provide safe water and sufficient quantities to satisfy water requirements for the growth and pressure of the population and the extension of the Town.
The main problem is the general assumption that ground water is contaminated and River Nile water can be used directly, without evidence for this statement.
This false assumption can be solved by the assessment and comparison of the quality of both surface and ground water to secure good water quality and in sufficient quantity.
Water samples were collected from River Nile and from 19 wells, then were analyzed physically, chemically, and biologically.
The results were compared with WHO and SSMO standards.
The results of the water analysis proved that ground water is safe and of good quality, within the permissible limits of the WHO and SSMO, defeating the false assumption that ground water is contaminated.
The results of the water analysis from River Nile sample exceeds the permissible limits of WHO and SSMO in turbidity, color and bacteriology quality .
Besides the poor bacteriological quality, high turbidity of the surface water stated above, the establishment of the plant station is economically more expensive than the ground water supply ; regarding establishment of plant station as an initial cost beside the running cost of the treatment and operation.
