English Abstract

The study area is located in elFasher town, the capital of the North Darfur State.

The center of the town situated at latitude 13º32´north and longitude 25º22´ east.

The extent of El Father area is about 975km².

It is about 805 km West South West of Khartoum, with an altitude approximately 740m above sea level. The drought events that hit the area have accelerated the process of desertification and influx of drought affected rural population around El Fasher town. The purpose of the study is to provide good quality water and sufficient quantities to satisfy water requirements for the growth of population, and displaced people as well as pressure of rural population on drinking water supply sources. The main problem is the general assumption that shortage of supply water in the town. This assumption can be solved by the assessments and comparison of quantity of both surface & groundwater to secure good water quality and in sufficient quantity.

The data and information collected from various sources such as Water Sanitation Sector, Public Water Co-operation in the State, NGOs in the State and stakeholders. The main objective of this study is assessment of drinking water quantity & quality in El Fasher town and compared with WHO &SSOM standards. Water samples are taken from six (6) hand pumps and the analysis in (WES) Water and Sanitation Sector laboratory.

The results of water analysis revealed that typical to SSOM & WHO standards.

The conclusions of the study as follows :  The results of water supply from the sources revealed that it is not satisfying the demand.  Surface water from Golo sources needs treatment and excavation of sediment deposits.  The town needs extra water sources, and rehabilitation of old water sources is recommended.  Water from the present sources are acceptable for community and it is within the acceptable levels of WHO and SSOM.
