English Abstract
The antibacterial activity of five essential oils extracted from aromatic plants : (Cyperus rotundus L., Coriandrum sativum L., Mentha spicata L., Commiphora myrrha (Nees) Engl.
and Xylopia aethiopica (Dunal) A.
Rich.
Commonly used in Sudanese traditional medicine were assessed in vitro against strains of Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, Shigella flexneri, Salmonella paratyphi B, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The antibacterial properties of the essential oils determined by the cup-plate method showed that Commiphora myrrha had the highest activity and the lowest activity was recorded from Xylopia aethiopica.
Klebsiella pneumoniae showed relatively high sensitivity to maximum number of essential oils (3) whereas Shigella flexneri and Proteus vulgaris were the least susceptible bacteria. Almost all of the essential oils tested showed different antibacterial activity to a certain extent.
The essential oils of Coriandrum sativum L and Commiphora myrrha at dilution 1:5 exhibited promising antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Proteus vulgaris where as the essential oils of Mentha spicata and Cyperus rotundus at dilution 1: 5 showed good activity against Salmonella paratyphi B and Shigella flexneri. These findings should stimulate the search for novel natural antibacterial agent.
