English Abstract

Although many iron deposits have been identified in different parts of the Sudan, no work on the processing of these deposits has been done .One of these deposits exists in Wadi Halfa area. The microscopic examination and X-ray diffraction analysis have been shown that the goethite and hematite are the major iron bearing minerals, with quartz and kaolinite as the main gangue minerals. Polished sections prepared from the different size fractions were studied under reflected light microscopic and free as well as locked particles of different minerals were counted .The degree of liberation was found to be-150 µm.

Various beneficiation techniques namely, gravity separation, magnetic separation and froth flotation were extensively investigated.

Gravity separation using shaking table was found to be inadequate for processing such fine sized iron ores.

High intensity magnetic separation was applied in the present investigation to upgrade the given iron ore.

The results revealed that an acceptable selectivity was achieved for iron minerals separation.

A concentrate of 62.52 % Fe content, with a recovery of 75.18 % Fe was reached after only one cleaning stage from a feed assaying 36 % Fe content . Several flotation systems using sulphonate, oleic acid as collector, were investigated.

Flotation results were found to be highly promising in obtaining high grade concentrates with less circuit complexity. From feed of 36 % Fe, a concentrate of 60 % Fe, SiO2 5 % with more than 85 % iron recovery was achieved using two alternative flotation systems.
