English Abstract
One of the major problems engendered by poverty in less-developed countries is the inability of such countries to carry out fresh medium-scale topographical mapping at regular time intervals using expensive but accurate topographical mapping techniques.
For such countries, an alternative which has proved to be cost-effective and efficient over the years is topographical map revision using existing topographical maps, satellite imageries and other free spatial data sources.
DEMs and visualization of the Earth relief since it has an advantage with high resolution and accuracy over very large areas.
Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) is such a data source that contains data with 3 arc seconds resolution and 16 m absolute height error (90% confidence level) and can be freely available in the Internet for 80% of the Earth land masses.
In this study, the SRTM height data are compared with the DEM derived from 100K topographic maps for two area in Sudan in the matter of visual and statistics.
The two study areas, the first on lies in east Sudan near Red sea north of Portsudan town approximately 1230 sq km.
and the other one lies in the middle of Sudan Blue Nile state approximately 3000 sq km, have been considered to represent various terrain characteristics.
For the comparison GPS test points are used to verify the height accuracy of both products then the DEMs created from the topographic maps are obtained, which are organized as files for each map sheet in different format, containing the digitized contour lines.
From this data, DEMs in the resolution of 3 arc seconds are created, which are in the same structure as the SRTM DEM.
Doing so these DEMs and the SRTM DEM can be point wise compared.
In the comparisons the influences of the terrain type is considered.
The comparisons for the first area shows the standard deviation is ± 6.171 meter and for the second area is ± 4.077 meter if we compare it with the vertical accuracy of the SRTM DEM in Africa is ±6.00 meter considered acceptable for both DEMs.
