English Abstract

In Darfur, many sources of water are available in forms of dams, Haffirs and wells.

However the search for economical sources is still a challenge.

This study is associated with one of the dams located in the south western Darfur crossing at longitude 23-24 degrees east and latitude 10-11 degrees north at Umdafog.

The current storage of the dam does not satisfy the demand despite the allegation that the Runoff quantities pass the dam is exceeding the demand.

The main objectives of this study is to calculate the supply and demand of Umdafog dam and then evaluate to hydrologically aspects of the dam and check the possibility to increase its capacity to meet the increasing demand.

An inventory of the water sources in Darfur is carried out to shed light on the problems associated with them.

The main source of rainfall data is Reheid Elberdi meteorological station with 25 years of data.

The rainfall is analyzed for intensity duration.

The maximum runoff is obtained by rational method.

Water balance analysis is then used to obtain the maximum annual yield of the catchment which is found to be 126 Mm3 and the mean annual yield is found to be 76 Mm3.

These values during the peak were found to be 0.95M m3 and 0.57M m3 respectively.

The study indicated that the current Umdafog storage is only 13% the mean annual yield.

There fore the dam can be raised by 3 meters without severely affecting the downstream users.

This additional height will increase the storage to about 46 Mm3.

Therefore, the study concluded that in order to secure the demand for water in the region, the Dam should be structurally redesigned to accommodate an increase in height of 3 m.
