English Abstract

The main objective of this study is to evaluate the urban growth in Greater Khartoum during the period 1972-2000.

Greater Khartoum is suggested to be the study area of this research work because it is the national capital of the country and of its strategic location and the fact that the city of Khartoum is highly constructed building activities and highly urban growth. The primary test data used in this study are sets of spectral bands acquired by the American Landsat images system in year 1972, 1987 and 2000. To achieve research objectives, the test data was subjected to enhancement process to highlight the land cover and land use feature in the study area.

False colour composites (Bands 2, 4 and 5) for each year have been generated to produce a colour image of the study area in 1972, 1987 and 2000. A supervised classification algorithm was applied to the generated images.

The changes took place in the study area during 1972-1987, 1987-2000, and 1972-2000 were detected based on statistical analysis applied to the output results during 1972-1987. The rate of growth in urban area was found to be 106.37 km2 which is equivalent to 142.74 %.

The urban growth taken place during 1987-2000 and 1972-2000 were detected to be 106.37 km2, 125.41 km2 which is equal to 17.9 %, 186.19 % of the total area, respectively. Landsat images data as well as the supervised classification techniques were found to be suitable and sufficient enough for quick estimation of the urban growth in greater Khartoum during 1972 and 2000.
