Survey and management of anesthesia related complications in the post anesthesia care unit (PACU)‎

Abstract EN

This is the first prospective study of anesthesia- related post-operative complications conducted in Hamad General Hospital.

One thousand one hundred and twenty-eight (1,128) adults admitted to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) during a period of three months were surveyed for anesthesia-related complications.

Documented complications were found in 48 patients (4.25 %).

The types of complications were related to the respiratory system, cardiovascular system, nausea / vomiting and body temperature in descending order.

Most of the complications happened to healthy ASA I and II patients.

Factors that plaed major role in determining the immediate post-operative complications were the ASA status, the level of anesthesia seniority attending the patient, the urgency and the nature of procedure.

We tried to find other factors that might influence complications in addition to those discussed below.
