English Abstract

This study was a cross-sectional study ,carried in the period 23rd of september 2009 to 25th october 2011 to determine the prevalence of activated protien C resistance (APCR) among Sudanese patients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in Khartoum state.

One hundred and thirty eight patients were included in this study after obtaining their verbal consent.

Activated protien C reistance test was carried out for all studied population.Statstical package for socail sciences (SPSS) computer program version (14) was used for data analysis.

Results showed a high prevalence of APCR in studied population (33.3 %).

The prevalence of hereditary APCR caused by factor V Leiden mutation (FVLM) among studied population was 18.8 %, of those 2.9 % were homozygous and 15.9% were heterozygous.

Acquired APCR showed a prevalence of 14.5 %. Family history, Age,and other associated clinical problems affected the prevalence of APCR signifiantlly (P.

Value < 0.05), while geographical origin, gender and history of DVT did not signifiantlly affect the prevalence of APCR.

(P.

Value > 0.05). In conclusion APCR has a high prevalence among Sudanese with DVT.

InheritedFVLM seems to be prevalent among those pateitns more than acquired causes.

We therefore recommend testing for APCR in all patients with DVT and people at risk for developing thrombosis, and in those with positive results we recommend screening their first degree relatives.
