English Abstract

The effects of ethanol extracts of Schouwia schimperi and Argemone Mexicana were investigated experimentally in glucose-loaded-rats, and streptozotocin induced-diabetic rats for their hypoglycemic activity and their impact on cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The ethanol extracts of the both plants were given at the doses of 200mg / kg and 400mg / kg body weight to glucose loaded wistar albino rats (2g / kg), and streptozotocin-induced- diabetic rats.

They caused significant reduction in plasma glucose levels (P < 0.05) at doses of 400 and 200 mg / kg Bwt.

in glucose loaded The effects Schouwia schimperi ethanol extract at the dose of 200 mg / kg were more prominent than those of glibenclamide which was taken as arefference standard.

Both extracts showed a significant reduction in cholesterol level (P < 0.05, p < .001), and Schouwia schimperi at the dose of 200 mg / kg reduced the triglycerides level significantly( p < .001). Also some phytochemical screening tests were made for these extracts and the results revealed that Argemone Mexicana contains high amounts of alkaloids, moderate quantities of deoxy-sugars and trace amounts of terpenoides, flavonoides and, tannins.

While schouwia schimperi contains high quantities of terpenoides, tannins and saponins besides moderate quantities of flavonoides and deoxy-sugars and trace amounts of alkaloids.
