Identification of immunoglobulin a and concentration of lysozyme and its relation to gingival fluid

Immunoglobulin A constitutes the major type of immunoglobulins present in external section.

Several investigations have published on the content of plasma proteins in gingival fluid.

Lysozyme has bactericidal properties linked to its ability to hydrolyze B-1, 4- glycoside bonds of peptidoglycans of bacterial cell wall.

The aims of this study was to investigate the type of IgA and the level of lysozyme and its relation to gingival inflammation.

Gingival fluid collected from 20 patients with varying severity of gingival inflammation.

IgA type was determined by immunoelectrophoresis method, and from 15 patients which divided into three groups according to their gingival score, lysozyme activity was determined by measuring the ability to kill lyophylized micrococcus lysodeikticus.

Results demonstrate that the IgA in gingival fluid was indicated to be of serum IgA type and the activity of lysozme enzyme increase with the severity of gingival inflammation.
