Abstract EN

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fracture resistance of different types of calcium hydroxide base materials under amalgam restorations.

Materials and methods: Conventional class V cavities were prepared on the buccal and lingual surfaces of freshly extracted premolar teeth to a depth of 2 mm.

Two types of self cured and one type of LC calcium hydroxide were applied in two different thickness (0.5-1 mm) to the axial wall, and seven minutes later the amalgam was applied and condensed manually.

All samples were examined under light microscope at 40X magnification.

Results: The highest amount of deformations were in the calcidor based samples with a mean of 1.6 at 1mm thickness, while the least amount of deformation with a mean of only 0.3 at both thickness was present in the LC calcimol based samples.

Conclusion: Light cured calcium hydroxide base material was more resistant to fracture than self cured types.

The fracture resistance of the self cured types showed reduction when the thickness increased from 0.5mm to 1mm.
