About seven thousand 13 year olds with no history of orthodontic treatment were selected from six governorates (Baghdad the capital, Ninevah, Basrah, Diyala, Anbar and Najaf).
An intra-oral clinical examination was used to assess the crowding / spacing condition of the dentition.
The maxillary anterior region showed the highest prevalence of 2mm or more spacing (9.9 %) and the mandibular anterior region showed the highest prevalence of 2mm or more crowding (19.4 %).
Concerning the distribution of spacing and crowding non-significant differences were found between the two genders, between urban and rural, and between the six examined governorates.
