Climate models throughout the world are predicting an increase in planetary temperature and precipitation levels given the continued buildup of greenhouse gases.
While most research on the issue focuses on temperature, relatively little work has been done concerning trends, totals, or variance of precipitation.
In this investigation, a newly-constructed global precipitation data base has been examined.
The results show (a) rainfall is on the rise, (b) the variance of total monthly precipitation is unchanged, and (c) total precipitation is positively related to global temperature.
The results are generally consistent with the predictions from the global climate models.
