English Abstract

This thesis deals with the processing of Hofrat En Nahas copper sulphide ore, which is considered as one of the largest copper deposits in Sudan.

Mineralogical examinations indicated that, the main valuable copper mineral present in that particular ore is chalcopyrite which is associated mostly with pyrite.

Other copper sulphides such as bornite, covellite and chalcocite were identified in trace quantities.

The gangue minerals are mainly feldspar, quartz and calcite.

Adequate degree of liberation of copper sulphide minerals was obtained by grinding the ore to minus 150µm.

In addition, the mineralogical investigation revealed that the chalcopyrite mineral surface has been subjected to oxidation or alteration.

Froth flotation was used to upgrade that particular copper ore.

Potassium amyl xanthate, sodium sulphide, and pine oil were used as collector, activator, and frother respectively.

Several operating parameters were studied.

These include the concentrations of the flotation reagents, conditioning time, pulp pH, and pulp density. Activation using sodium sulphide was found to be essential to improve the floatability of the copper sulphide minerals. Promising results were obtained at certain operating conditions.

From an ore feed grading 2.7%Cu,a copper concentrate of 20% Cu with recovery of 94.59 % was obtained by only one cleaning stage.

Based on the results obtained, a process flow sheet to upgrade that ore was suggested.
