English Abstract

The students of the English Department at Omdurman Islamic University face a serious problem in using cohesive devices in writings.

This study addresses this problem.

This study raises two hypothesis: Fist, students of English at fourth level do not make much use of cohesive devices.

Second, most fourth year students of English make use of only logical connecters as cohesive devices in writing.

The sample of the study was selected randomly.

The instrument adopted for the experiment data collection was students' answer sheets in final English Department examination.

Students were not told that their answers would be used for the purpose of research.

Statistical techniques have contributed greatly in organizing, analyzing and interpreting numerical data of the study. The results of this study proved that these students can use only reference (1216 times), addition (402 times) and repetition (204 times) as cohesive devices.

Even these types were overused and misused.

Finally, students used ellipsis only (66times), substitution (120 times).

Members use them in a limited range.
