The microbescanhydrolyzeureabyureaseenzymetoproduceammoniumaswellascar- bonate ionsandinthepresenceofcalciumionswhichcanprecipitatecalciumcarbonate;thispro- cess iscalled‘‘biocalcification’’ormicrobialinducedcalciteprecipitation(MICP).Thistechnologyis environmentally friendlynotonlybecauseitgivesstrengthtosandbody,butalsoitallowswaterto penetrate tosandbody,whichisunlikesilicatecementthatwilldestroytheecosystemoftheearth.

Calcium carbonateprecipitatedbybacteriaactsasabindingmaterialtosandparticles,soincom- pact sandwillbeconsolidated.Calciumchloride,calciumacetateandcalciumnitrate(1M)ascal- cium sourcesweretestedfortheirabilitytoconsolidatesandbymixingwithurea(1M)andbacteria cells (oneopticaldensity,1OD).Thekeypointofthisstudyaimedtochoosethesuitablecalcium source whichproduceshighercompressivestrengthandlowerwaterabsorption.Theresultsshowed that thedegreeofcrystallinityandamountofprecipitatedcalciumcarbonate,aswellastheconse- quent increaseinstrengthofconsolidatedsand,incaseofcalciumchloridemediumarehigherthan those precipitatedincaseofcalciumacetateaswellascalciumnitratemedia.Inaddition,consol- idated sandbycalciumchloridewasalsousedforcementmortarcrackremediation
